What Are Hornets?

Hornets are the largest type of social wasp, and work together in colonies. In the UK, there is only one native species of hornet: the European hornet (Vespa crabro), however, the Asian hornet has been seen here since 2016. Worker and male hornets of this species range from 2-3 cm in length, while queens are larger, measuring around 3-4 cm long. Despite their more intimidating size, hornets are not as aggressive as common wasps and will only sting if provoked or if their nest is disturbed.

Finding a Hornet Nest

Hornet nests consist of grey hexagonal cones which are made up of paper-mache-like material, which hornets create by mixing saliva with wood pulp. These nests can be located in a wide range of places, such as in holes in the ground, within the walls of buildings, in trees or in large bushes.
