Hornet Pest Control and Treatment

Finding a hornet nest on your property can cause a lot of distress but it’s best not to take matters into your own hands. When threatened, hornets will become aggressive and attack. Without the proper experience, hornet pest control is dangerous and should be left to professional pest controllers who have experience and specialist equipment. At Xpress, we use powder-based insecticides to treat hornet nests, which targets the nest to eliminate the queen and larvae. The insecticides used work quickly to combat hornets and their nests. There is no need to search for ‘hornet pest control near me’. The Xpress hornet pest control experts are here and ready to assist you 24 hours a day.

What Are Hornets?

Hornets are the largest type of social wasp, and work together in colonies. In the UK, there is only one native species of hornet: the European hornet (Vespa crabro), however, the Asian hornet has been seen here since 2016. Worker and male hornets of this species range from 2-3 cm in length, while queens are larger, measuring around 3-4 cm long. Despite their more intimidating size, hornets are not as aggressive as common wasps and will only sting if provoked or if their nest is disturbed.

Finding a Hornet Nest

Hornet nests consist of grey hexagonal cones which are made up of paper-mache-like material, which hornets create by mixing saliva with wood pulp. These nests can be located in a wide range of places, such as in holes in the ground, within the walls of buildings, in trees or in large bushes. A hornet nest can house hundreds of worker hornets, which becomes a major problem if their nests are located on your property. If a nest is left untreated, it will produce fertile queens which will hibernate and establish new nests the next year. So, to avoid a yearly hornet problem, call the friendly Xpress team. Our pest controllers can be with you between 30 to 90 minutes* from your call.

FAQs

If you want some advice, our expert advisors are on hand 24/7* to help. They can talk through your problem and give you a free, no-obligation, estimate based on your specific situation. Or take a look at our frequently asked questions below and see how our professionals can help you.

Are hornets aggressive?
Hornets are not usually aggressive unless they feel threatened or if their nest is disturbed.

To avoid painful and possibly dangerous stings, do not attempt DIY hornet pest control. Hornets will sting when they feel threatened or feel the nest is under attack. Hornets can sting repeatedly.
What’s the difference between a European hornet and a yellowjacket wasp?
Hornets are much larger than wasps and have a reddish-brown colouring that differs from the more yellow look of wasps.

Another difference is that hornets tend to be less aggressive than wasps, though hornet stings are more painful.

Both hornet and wasp nests require a professional pest control service to treat them quickly and safely.
What’s the difference between a European hornet and an Asian hornet?
European hornets tend to be larger than Asian hornets ranging from 2 to 4 cm in length.

Asian hornets are smaller and are on average 2 to 3 cm long. They also tend to be darker than European hornets having a black body with a dark thorax, yellow bands and yellow legs. Whereas, European hornets tend to be lighter in colour with thick yellow bands across their abdomen and a red-brown thorax.
How long do hornets live?
If a hornet has a food source, worker hornets can live for at least 12 to 22 days, while queen hornets can survive for up to a year. However, if a hornet does not have access to a food source, it will only live for a few days.
How can I tell if a hornet nest is active?
An active hornet nest will regularly have hornets flying to and from the nest. If you see a lot of hornet activity, and if the nest has been established for more than 48 hours, it can be treated by a pest control service.
What should I do if I find a hornet nest?
If you ever find a hornet nest, it’s best to leave it. Do not attempt to move the nest on your own. Instead, contact the Xpress team who are available to help you 24/7.

We can be with you within 30-90 minutes* and will be able to safely treat the hornet nest. Trust your hornet pest control to the Xpress specialists.
