The most common types of wood-boring beetle in the UK is, the Furniture Beetle, Death Watch Beetle, House Longhorn Beetle or Powderpost Beetle. The beetles lay eggs on the wood’s surface and as they hatch the larvae feed on the wood, burrowing a series of tunnels inside that weakens the structure. The damage is often not visible until the woodworm has been active for years. Adults then burrow outwards, leaving larger holes, to start the cycle of reproduction. Woodworm larvae are off-white or yellowish with a brown head and black head-pincers. They are around 6mm in length. If you have woodworm, you’ll see exit holes and possibly bore dust piles or frass left by the adult beetles. Frass is actually the beetles’ droppings. You might also see dead or live beetles near infected wood. It’s not often you’ll see larvae as they are buried in the wood itself. An obvious sign is crumbling wood, but dry rot can also show similar results, minus the holes.
At Xpress our woodworm pest control treats woodworm in different ways, depending on the infestation. A water-based treatment minimises the exposure to people and pets and the environment. The solution stays inside the layers of the timber to help with long-term protection, and to prevent any future infestations from becoming established. This also helps in treating fungal decay. We may also use a gas fumigant with the active ingredient Sulfuryl Fluoride to eliminate all life stages of wood-boring insect infestations. Severely weakened wood may need to be replaced to ensure the structural integrity of your home. The woodworm pest control experts at Xpress are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you’re in a hurry, we’ll try and be with you within 30 to 90 minutes* of your call. If you think you have a woodworm infestation, speak to one of our team today.
